Beautiful Dio

Here are some more pictures of our beautiful boy, Dio.

Friday 24 August 2012

Hair trouble

Dio the lucher gets some tlc
This greyhound/lurcher has served his 7 days in the pound after being brought in by the dog warden. He is now lucky enough to have secured himself a rather nice foster home.

Dio, as he is now named, is a little bit bald as you can see from his picture. It isn't contagious but he is on medication for it now and his hair is slowly starting to grow back. The poor lad is very confused and everything seems to be very new to him. He was fascinated by the television and loves meeting new people. His foster mum says his tail never stops wagging.

Another dog who has been picked up by the dog warden is Trixie. She is an adorable terrier mix but her coat is in such a terrible state. We have booked her in at the groomers so it won't be long before she is feeling a bit more comfortable.

You can't see the extent of it from her picture, right, but her feet are solid with mats of fur.

The positive side to this is that in a couple of weeks this pair will be looking like different dogs and would have gained confidence and know what it is like to be loved.

In an ideal world these dogs should have been loved, wanted and looked after from the start but for some reason they weren't. Now they will get their second chances.

Latest news

Have your entered our calendar competition yet? It is such an exciting venture for us and we are getting some fantastic entries. There are so many gorgeous dogs out there!

You still have just over a week to enter so follow this link and send us your pictures http://forum.fourpawsanimalrescue.org.uk/index.php?board=273.0

A couple of our houndy pups, Flora and Nivea were transferred to the Dogs Trust yesterday. It's strange because they've had little or no interest. They are sweetest pups, although will need lots of training as they grow up. Our two very upset foster carers who were looking after these guys have everything crossed for them finding their forever homes now they have a wider audience.

Freddie, our pound boy with the poorly paw, has also gone to the Trust where he will receive the extra care and support he needs to get over his troubles, leaving another upset foster carer.

This is one of the downsides of fostering because we always expect to be with them until they get to their forever homes. Sometimes though, this is not possible but we hope we have done a small part in preparing them for when the right home does come along.

Now, you may be wondering why we have a picture of cosmetics company, Lush. Lydia Nizibilian, who nursed Chou Chou back to health, is a member of their online forum and on that forum Lush hold many 'sales' with the proceeds going to charity. We received nearly £1,500 this year so far from their 'charity pot' and about £4,000 from their international online forum. Thank you to Lydia and all the lovely folk at Lush. We appreciate your support.

Calendar competition

We are calling on all devoted owners of rescue dogs to nominate their camera-loving canines to appear in the new FPAR 2013 calendar.

Twelve lucky dogs will be selected by the editor of Dogs Today magazine, Beverley Cuddy, to appear in the calendar, and will take part in a professional photoshoot in Cardiff courtesy of Lann Niziblian (www.hatchlingphoto.4ormat.com)

Of this dazzling dozen, one will be chosen by renowned artist, Mary Herbert , (www.portra.co.uk) to appear on the calendar cover, and their owner will receive a framed pastel portrait of the ‘top dog’, worth £280.

The competition opens on Monday, August 13 and is open to everyone with a rescue dog - not just those from FPAR - and the closing date is Monday, August 27, 2012. Entry requires a £1 goodwill donation per photo submitted, via www.justgiving.com/fourpawsanimalrescue

To enter just email your name, address, and phone number, along with a brief summary and photo of your dog (no larger than 1MB) to calendar@fourpawsanimalrescue.org.uk

Welcome donation

We have been voted as Asda's Community Life Chosen Charity and receive £200. That is a huge help to us.

Thanks for thinking of us!

Was that our summer?

The nice weather was short-lived! It hasn't deterred adopters though and we are very happy to say that many of our dogs are reserved or have gone to their new homes already this week.

One of those dogs who is off to her new home on Thursday is Chou Chou. It has been a long road but finally she has had the metalwork removed from her leg and is now needs to build up the muscles. Obviously the care will continue in her new home but her patient new owners are aware of this and can't wait to have her with them. She will also have a new name but we don't know what it is... well, her foster carer does but she's not telling.... yet.

We have had a few events on the go recently with a stall at Blackwood Carnival, a weekend at the Big Cheese so if you popped along to see us then thank you for your support.

Just a reminder: If you have put in an application for a dog, applied to become a volunteer or anything else please bear with us. We try to process all the paperwork as quickly as we can but also have to juggle paid employment, family and care of our own pets.

Hounds

Just look at our new additions. They are beautiful hound cross pups and are all waiting for their new homes.

Flora

Nivea

Ribbon
Yola
They are around 10 weeks old now and although look super cute we would ask any potential adopters to do their research on houndy types. They are known for following their nose rather than any instruction so can be very hard to train and rather stubborn. Although they are very good natured and make brilliant family pets.

To find out more about them please visit http://forum.fourpawsanimalrescue.org.uk/index.php?board=8.0

Update on Tara

Unfortunately Tara's cancer is too widely spread and it is beyond any sort of treatment. This lovely girl will spend the rest of her days with foster carer Zoe and family and be cherished until the end.

Seasonal struggle

Sorry for the negative aspects of this post. It really isn't much fun having to report how difficult life is for us as an animal charity but unfortunately the summer struggle has begun.

When we can't find foster homes for the pound dogs we rent boarding kennel space so that the dogs are safe. Not only is this expensive, it also depends on how busy the boarding kennels are and in the summer with people off on their summer holidays space is in short supply.

The pounds are still overrun with abandoned and stray dogs and all of our foster carers are taking at least one dog into their care so they can be assessed for rehoming.

One such dog is Lady Tara who was found straying in a terrible state. She has a very large mammary tumour and we are waiting for results of her blood tests to see if it can be safely removed.

We have recruited some lovely new foster carers and are very grateful for the extra support but we always need more to enable us to save more poundies. If you can help please fill out a foster carer application form and we will arrange a homecheck for you. Meet Ellie

Ellie is a five year old shih tzu. Before coming to us she spent her life in a kennel but now she has retired from breeding she is desperate for a loving home of her own.

She has come on leaps and bounds while in foster care but will probably always remain a nervous girl and although she is getting used to living in the home environment we think it is best if she is rehomed in a quiet household where there is a calm resident dog to show her the ropes. Children are also a no no - simply because she wouldn't be able to cope with their exuberance and noise levels.

Ellie has been overlooked and we just can't understand why.  She is a joy to have around, sleeps quietly at night, travels beautifully in the car and will continue to gain in confidence as time goes on.

Good news and bad news

Freddie with his poorly leg
Chou Chou with her leg pins
The good news is that little Freddie, the crossbreed from the pound, has found a lovely foster home so he's out of kennels and starting the journey to his forever home.

The bad news is we noticed that he wasn't putting any weight on his front paw and hasn't been for some time as the nails on that foot were considerably longer. After his foster carer took him to the vets for his vaccinations the vet assessed him and with x-rays discovered that the poor little man has had every toe in his paw broken.

In the vet's opinion this was a deliberate injury and would only have happened if someone stamped on his paw. Freddie would have been in considerable pain for some time. He has to go back to the vets tomorrow to find out the best treatment and currently his leg is in a splint. We are expecting a long and painful course of treatment for Freddie before he gets full use of his paw again.

As usual we will pick up the pieces but funds-wise we're having a rough time of it this year. What with van breakdowns and Chou Chou's major operation and another on the cards for little Freddie...

Chou Chou has had her operation to repair her broken leg - see above. She is slowly having the internal pins removed as the bones fuse together. Luckily she remains with her foster carer while in recovery and although has a forever home lined up will not be able to live there until all of her pins are out. It is expected that she will have to remain in foster care for at least another 3 months so hopefully will gain in more confidence as she recovers. Currently she is terrified of going outside and panic wees at the slightest thing.

If only dogs could talk eh?

Please, please if you can give something, however small, towards either of these babies' vets bills do so via Just Giving http://www.justgiving.com/fourpawsanimalrescue

Many thanks

Happy Jubilee Weekend

It may not be glorious sunshine at the moment, but it is still quite warm so we can enjoy plenty of walks with the dogs and BBQs this weekend given that most of us have a bit of extra time off.

The work of FPAR doesn't stop on Bank Holidays and several of our kennel dogs are being transported to other rescues this weekend. At this time of year when everyone is going on holidays and boarding their dogs,  kennel space becomes in short supply for us so it helps for other rescues to take dogs that we cannot find foster homes for.

Our two beautiful Staffie pups Gloria and Cullen have gone to their new homes this weekend so two lucky families will be enjoying getting to know their new additions.

Preparation continues for the Fonmon Charity Dog Show http://www.fonmoncharitydogshow.com/ which is being held on Bank Holiday Monday. FPAR are calling on all available volunteers as this show is a biggie. There will be a parade for all the rescues involved between 10am and 10.45 to highlight the dogs in our care that need new homes, lots of doggy show classes, fun and games for everyone and more chances to win at the raffle, subject to ticket availability.

Please come along and support us. We would love to see you and so will our foster dogs!

Magic Merlin

Merlin is a special boy. He was rehomed through FPAR several years ago and has sadly returned as his elderly owner has fallen ill and is unable to care for him any more.

Merlin is at least 9 years old and is a bit wobbly on his legs. His foster carer has taken him to the vets and they have recommended massage. This is working wonders with him. Apparently he has some sort of nerve problem that affects his back end and in addition to that he suffers from a condition called paraphimosis, which means he can't put his 'aparatus' away. Feel free to google it for more information!

He doesn't ask for much. Love, patience and the company of another calm dog and Merlin will be a happy boy. Do you have what it takes?

Please visit his rehoming thread here http://forum.fourpawsanimalrescue.org.uk/index.php?topic=9374.0

Could you offer a forever home to one of Kimmie's pups?

Tudyr
Tiegan
Megan
Bryn
Dai
Dilys
These beautiful puppies are 3 weeks old now and will be ready to go to their new homes from June 30, 2012. We believe they are collie pups.Their mum, Kimmie, is a Welsh collie and is a working dog. Anyone who applies for one of these pups must be prepared to offer a home with plenty of exercise, mental and physical stimulation as well as ongoing training.

Saturday 26 May 2012

Gosh, a week since our last post!

Bow - reserved
We have been very busy this week. Several of our dogs and puppies that weren't getting much interest with us have been transferred to the Dogs Trust, where there is a waiting list of people looking to adopt. This is great news for them because they get a wider audience and are sure to find their forever home really soon.

Bow is a lurcher boy who is 2 years old and an absolute sweetheart. To find out more about this lad please visit http://forum.fourpawsanimalrescue.org.uk/index.php?topic=9340.0 Update: Bow had visitors on Sunday who adored him so he is now reserved pending a homecheck.

Here is the lovely Jade. She has been in kennels for some time now but as finally got herself a smashing foster home. Her fosterers say she is a big softy so please forget all you read about Staffies being well 'ard status dogs. Most of them aren't. They used to be known as Nanny dogs because they were so good with people and children.  Jade is showering her fosterers with those famous Staffie kisses and is desperate for a home to call her own. For more information on her please visit http://forum.fourpawsanimalrescue.org.uk/index.php?topic=9357.0

We were also asked to collect some kittens who were born in someone's shed - and they didn't even own a cat! Luckily Denise at Vale Cat Rescue was on hand to take them and the Cat's Protection volunteers will be heading down to the house soon to set traps to catch the very nervous mother cat so she can be spayed and hopefully rehomed. It wasn't an ideal situation and it's always nice to keep the family together but she was so fearful of humans that no one could get near her. At least the kittens have been rescued. In a few weeks time we may have lost the opportunity to get them because mum would have taken them off elsewhere and there would be 7 nervous cats on the loose.

Well, until next time enjoy your weekend and all of this wonderful weather.

Please remember DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG IN YOUR CAR. In this heat even with a window open air may not circulate and this could be fatal for your pet.

Paws 4 Tea Dinas Powys

Dave and Rebecca on the cake stall
We would like to say a big thank you to all our supporters who came to our Paws 4 Tea event today.

Our foster carers corner was jam packed with foster dogs and kennel dogs waiting for a second chance in life and we really hope you enjoyed meeting them.

As usual our delicious cake stall was a huge success and Dave and Rebecca did a grand job in running it and, of course, the baking!

Thanks to Leanne and Kaz who worked very hard to get our first area promoting foster carers and hopefully some of you will be going home and filling out those forms and welcoming your first foster dog before too long.
Foster carers wanted

The weather was kind to us too and remained dry - even the sun put in an appearance.

We managed to raise an awesome £447. Thank you.

Some of our kennel dogs

If you think you could foster one of these beautiful dogs and haven't registered with us yet please fill out a foster carer application form (https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dDEtVF9tc2xvQWRxMlZmWFFVWXRaaUE6MA)

Here we have:

Cooper

Lovely lurcher-type boy

Biscuit

Casper

Milo

Theo
They are all looking for their second chance but unless someone offers them a space in a foster home this will not happen. All FPAR dogs undergo a 14-day assessment so we can get to know them and their requirements so if you have what it takes then please get in touch.

New arrivals

Lilly

Sorry, we didn't stop with the cute puppy pictures for long! We have some new arrivals that came into our care this weekend.

First of all there is Lilly (sister of Robbie). She is a 14 week old crossbreed and we're guessing there is labrador in the mix somewhere, although cannot be sure.
To find out more about her please visit http://forum.fourpawsanimalrescue.org.uk/index.php?topic=9268.0
Rocket

Then we have 9 week old Rocket. He is an absolute sweetheart and loves a cuddle. His pictures really do not do him justice as he is a very handsome chap. We really have no idea what sort of cross he is, but can say he is a cutie (and so's his sister Sparkle), Visit http://forum.fourpawsanimalrescue.org.uk/index.php?topic=9261.0 to find out more about him.

Sparkle

Sparkle is a 9 week old pup, sister of Rocket. She is a little bundle of energy but also loves cuddles and is very affectionate. Again, we have no idea what she is crossed with and her pictures most certainly do not do her justice. For one, she won't keep still for long enough! For more information on her please visit
http://forum.fourpawsanimalrescue.org.uk/index.php?topic=9262.0

Robbie

This is little Robbie, brother of Lilly. He's a 14 week old crossbreed (with some lab in the mix, we think, but cannot be sure). This handsome boy spent his first night sleeping soundly in his bed and was as quiet as a mouse. For more information on this lovely lad, visit http://forum.fourpawsanimalrescue.org.uk/index.php?topic=9265.0

Neo
Neo has been with us for a couple of weeks now but we've only just got him into his foster home. He is a very nervous boy and will need an understanding and patient home with another dog to show him the ropes.  He is a 15 week old husky pup and as cute as he looks, he will be hard work when he grows up. Huskies are working dogs and are known to be quite stubborn so a home experienced with this breed would be a benefit. For further information please visit http://forum.fourpawsanimalrescue.org.uk/index.php?topic=9253.0
Murphy
Murphy is a 18 month old bouncy labrador. He has come back to us because the resident dog couldn't cope with his bounciness. Like most labs he is food orientated so training will not be a problem. He is eager to please and will make a wonderful addition to anyone's family.
For more information visit http://forum.fourpawsanimalrescue.org.uk/index.php?topic=8977.0
